A family photo cube is a simple, hands-on way to help children recognize the people they love and start talking about them. All you need is an empty box and a handful of printed photos.
At N Family School, we love finding simple ways to help children build connections with family and friends, even the ones they don't see every day.
An empty cardboard box (a shoebox or shipping box works well)
Printed photos of family members and close friends
Tape
Optional: colored paper, wrapping paper, or your child's own artwork for decorating
This activity works well from around 6 months, once a baby starts recognizing familiar faces, all the way through the preschool years. Children over about a year old often enjoy helping pick out their favorite photos to include.
Recognizing and naming family members is a meaningful milestone for infants, and it's often a favorite part of their day. For older children, looking at photos sparks conversation and helps build language skills around family, friendship, and the people who matter most in their life. It's also a lovely way to keep a child connected to family or friends they don't get to see often.
Start with an empty box, taped at the edges to make a solid cube. Cover it with colored paper, wrapping paper, or let your child decorate it with their own drawings.
Next, gather a handful of printed photos of family members and close friends. If your child is over about a year old, let them look through photos on your phone or tablet with you and help pick out their favorites. Try to include a mix of people, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, or family friends, especially anyone your child doesn't get to see in person very often.
Tape or glue the photos to each side of the cube, and let your child pick it up, roll it, and talk about who they see.
Helping children build language and connection around the people they love is something our Educators nurture every day at N Family School. Simple experiences like naming a family member in a photo or talking about a favorite cousin help children build vocabulary, confidence, and a stronger sense of who's in their circle.
