Making music with your feet is a simple sensory activity that helps infants and toddlers build core strength while they discover cause and effect. All it takes is a baking sheet (or other noisy household item) and a comfortable spot for your child to kick.
At N Family School, we love learning experiences like this because they turn ordinary household items into a chance for your young child to explore movement, sound, and cause and effect all at once.
A comfortable, safe area for your baby or toddler to lie down
A baking sheet, or another household item that makes a good sound when kicked, such as a plastic mixing bowl, an empty oatmeal container with the lid taped shut, or a ribbon with jingle bells* securely attached
Safety note: If you're using anything with small parts, like jingle bells or a taped-on lid, double-check that everything is secure before each use, and always supervise your baby or toddler during this activity.
This activity works well from around 3 months, once your infant starts kicking with purpose, all the way through the toddler years. Babies who are sitting up or crawling can try the same activity with their hands instead of their feet.
Lying down and kicking or pushing with their legs and feet is great for building core strength in infants and young toddlers. Having something nearby that makes a sound when they kick it gives them an early, hands-on lesson in cause and effect, and it builds concentration as they repeat the motion to hear that sound again.
Have your child lie down comfortably, with their feet close to a wall or piece of furniture where you'll place the baking sheet or other item. Sit nearby so you can keep it secure, and encourage your little one to kick their feet against it so it makes a sound.
Try mixing it up together. Can they kick fast or slow? How can you make it sound louder or softer? Once they've gotten the hang of it with their feet, they can try the same thing with their hands, either sitting up or lying on their tummy.
Cause and effect is one of the first big lessons an infant learns, and it's something we build into our younger classrooms every day at N Family School. Whether it's a baby kicking a bowl to hear a sound or reaching out to see what happens next, these small sensory moments help build core strength, concentration, and an early sense of how their actions shape the world around them, the same skills this activity nurtures at home.
